Playing Videos Inside the Terminal on Ubuntu 10.04+

This article is all about playing a video file inside the terminal, NOT playing a video file using the terminal to invoke a media player.

First, you have to install the mplayer package.

sudo apt-get install mplayer

After the installation, use this command to play videos in colored mode:

mplayer -vo caca [filename]

If you want the video to be played in black and white, use this:

mplayer -vo aa [filename]

That’s it, you can now play a video file using your handy terminal.

As you can see, this is a sample video I played using a media player.
